The origins of the Frankfurt (Oder) town hall date back to the 13th century; over the centuries, this historic building has undergone many refurbishments and extensions. Today, among other things, it serves as an administrative hub. As part of an architectural competition, the city council recently embarked on a comprehensive renovation of the listed building. The aim was to create a seamless connection between its diverse architectural elements with harmonious lighting, while doing justice to the different usage scenarios. The result? The project was awarded the prestigious BDA Prize Brandenburg 2024.
The lighting concept for this historic site was developed by the renowned Berlin-based lighting design office Konzeptlicht. The design required luminaires that seamlessly integrate with both the historical and modern sections of the building, uniting them to form a unique, cohesive architectural whole. TRILUX’s extensive portfolio and expertise in developing customised solutions played a key role in achieving the vision. We use solutions from our standard portfolio, such as Sonnos downlights, Finea light channels and bespoke circular lights designed specifically for the space.
With their minimalist design and clear design language, our lights perfectly complemented various rooms and architectural styles. The Finea 50 light channel, with its versatile configurations, provides a common thread running through circulation areas such as corridors and stairwells. It is equipped with indirect light, ConVision optics, sensors, or emergency lighting LEDs, depending on the application. The lighting design is further enhanced by nearly 400 Sonnos downlights, as well as numerous circular and semi-circular luminaires with opal or microprismatic diffusers.
In the listed sections of the building, lighting flexibility and sensitivity were required. For the foyer, for example, custom circular lights were developed to blend seamlessly into the skylights, mimicking natural daylight - even during early mornings or late evenings. Also, in areas where there are ceiling paintings, the Finea light channel was installed using a specially designed cable suspension system to preserve the integrity of these valuable works of art.
"The lighting helps to bring together all the areas of the building, across different architectural eras, to create a functional and atmospheric whole," explains Frank Hinz, Architectural Sales at TRILUX, who oversaw the project. The result is a vibrant, listed building that serves as a modern, inviting meeting and administrative centre.
