Now it's getting serious: new EU regulations on energy efficiency (the Ecodesign Directive) and the use of mercury in light sources (RoHS Directive) make refurbishment with LED luminaires inevitable in the long run. In theory, retrofit conversion is quick and easy. In practice, however, the effort involved is often underestimated.

Retro Fit vs. 1:1 Exchange

In the lighting market, a retrofit solution is a modern lighting system, such as an LED lamp. This has been designed to fit into an old, existing lampholder. The aim is to exploit the advantages of LED technology without having to modify the existing lighting infrastructure. So instead of new wiring or lampholders, only the light source is replaced. What sounds so simple and convincing in theory, however, often turns out to be more complex in practice. When converting outdated T5/T8 FLUORESCENT TUBE SYSTEMS, it is true that savings in energy costs can be achieved quickly, easily and relatively inexpensively by replacing retrofit LED lamps. But: in a professional environment, other factors must be taken into account in addition to investment and energy costs, such as compliance with standards, overall cost-effectiveness, as well as questions of lighting quality, safety, controllability, warranty and FINANCING.

CONCLUSION: LED COMPLETE SYSTEMS ARE USUALLY THE BETTER REFURBISHMENT SOLUTION

Due to the specifications of the Ecodesign and RoHS directives, various conventional lamps – such as T5/T8 fluorescent tubes and mercury vapour – are already no longer commercially available. This means that the refurbishing of lighting systems becomes unavoidable in the long run. To convert the luminaire, simply replace the conventional lamp with a customised LEDKit. The luminaire body installed in or on the ceiling and the optical system continue to be used.
