The Van Mossel Automotive Group is one of the largest automotive groups in the Benelux region, with a portfolio of 43 car brands, ranging from VW and Mercedes to Skoda, Smart, Renault and Nissan. In addition to new vehicles, Van Mossel also deals in used cars. In 2022, the Group built a new premium automotive facility on a 13-hectare site in Waalwijk, the Netherlands. It comprises around 9,000 m2 of office space, 21,000 m2 of sales and exhibition space, and 3,500 parking spaces for employees, customers and visitors.

A building with many functions

One standout feature of this five-storey building, with its spacious open foyer at the center, is its multifunctional design. The building combines logistics and administration areas, a showroom and museum, as well as a restaurant, a coffee bar and a 200-seat auditorium. Other parts of the building include a car polishing area, a workshop and body shop.

The site also boasts six car washes, four spray booths, its own filling station, ten truck parking spaces and several body shops. "There is even a canteen for the drivers where they can have a good coffee, a bite to eat and a rest," explains project manager Peter Kluijfhout, Key Account Manager Retail at TRILUX.

Sophisticated lighting concept from office to retail

The variety of spaces within the building posed unique and often specialised demands on the lighting. Sector-specific solutions were required for office, retail, industry, catering and outdoor applications. Thanks to our extensive portfolio and industry expertise, we were able to meet all these requirements. The lighting concept was developed in several stages, in close collaboration with architects and project managers, and the lighting technology and design were always tailored to each specific application. "We deliberately chose a limited number of product families to create a sense of calm and elegance through a consistent design language," adds Peter Kluijfhout.

Tailor-made light, high degree of customization

In the offices, Sonnos and luminaires from our 39 series provide excellent visual conditions and a pleasant working atmosphere. A version of the 39 series, specially developed for the Benelux market is used for a calm ceiling appearance and is ideal for certain climate-controlled ceilings. In the showroom and museum area, outstanding lighting quality is essential for highlighting and showcasing the exhibits.

The task was solved with the Finea light channel, Canilo spotlights and Sistema Compact luminaires, among others. In the workshop areas, Van Mossel relies on the classic E-Line Next continuous-row lighting system, with lighting technology and protection class tailored to the area of application. For the aluminum slatted ceilings in the office and showroom areas, we developed the special 39G3 SAPP slat luminaire, which integrates harmoniously into the ceiling structure and illuminates the room perfectly.

Smart technology: Connection to the building management system

To ensure seamless control and monitoring, the interior lighting was connected via DALI and integrated into the building management system. Initially, the outdoor lighting was also planned to be connected to the building management system via DALI. However, due to the absence of control lines in the outdoor area, we opted to network the Jovie post-top luminaires wirelessly using LiveLink Outdoor and connected them to the building management system via a customized interface," recalls Peter Kluijfhout.

This was an exciting and highly versatile project - and the effort was well worth it. The lighting not only impresses with its quality and efficiency, but it also creates the desired atmosphere throughout the new headquarters with mood-enhancing and scenic light. And since sustainability is a key factor in everything we do, the project, is of course, BREEAM-certified.
