TRIPOLIS Park Amsterdam

Smart Light for a Unique Office Campus

The redesign of TRIPOLIS Park in Amsterdam combines everything a lighting company could dream of in a project. With the aim of creating a cutting-edge office campus, the new development blends the listed buildings on the park-like grounds with a spectacular new building. The 11-storey structure shields the site from the adjacent motorway, creating a protected and enclosed atmosphere. Our mission was to develop a smart, energy-efficient and, above all, attractive lighting solution for all areas – indoors and outdoors - from a single source.

Shooting an area with potential

Originally designed by architect Aldo van Eyck in 1994, TRIPOLIS Park was declared a municipal monument in 2019, subjecting it to heritage protection regulations. After purchasing the site, real estate developer FLOW Development embarked on a comprehensive revitalisation project guided by three basic principles: user well-being, maximum sustainability and future-proof technology throughout the campus. The lighting requirements were equally ambitious - ideal conditions to showcase our portfolio of solutions and services as a full-service provider for lighting, which were both convincing and inspiring.

A Grand-Scale Project with 13,000 Light Points

The project comprised approximately 13,000 light points, most of which we could source from our standard portfolio, including 39er G3, Onplana, Lenty and Sonnos) However, many of the luminaires were customised for the project and adapted to suit particular applications.

A standout feature is our So-Tube light sculpture, which is a real show stopper in the foyer. The outdoor lighting is just as stylish: in the park and on the cascading roof terraces, our ConStela, 8841 bollard luminaires and Skeo Q, among others, create an atmospheric ambience. Skeo Q was also used in the covered transition areas, harmonising the listed buildings with the new construction.

3,000 Lights with Smart Sensors

To maximise energy efficiency throughout the building and create a pleasant indoor climate, the lighting system integrates additional sensors to collect data on temperature, humidity and occupancy levels. Using wireless mesh technology, luminaires are connected to the building management system via an advanced protocol, creating a future-ready Smart Grid. TRI-Sensors are discreetly embedded in the luminaires, enabling motion detection and daylight control while maintaining an uncluttered ceiling design. The data gathered optimises the indoor climate, adjusts HVAC systems to actual room usage, and offers valuable insights into building performance. For example, 3D visualisations of room usage and temperature data help improve the building's energy efficiency and functionality.

HCL - Light Quality that Impresses

"At the start of the project, the specification focussed on high-quality, glare-free light – without mentioning Human Centric Lighting (HCL), which dynamically changes the light colour to mimic daylight and is perceived as particularly pleasant," recalls Willem Dammers, CEO of TRILUX Benelux, who led the project. However, a demonstration convinced FLOW Development to include Tunable White luminaires with HCL throughout the campus. Employees can even adjust the light intensity or colour to suit their preferences via an app if desired.

Multi Award-Winning

TRIPOLIS Park has received numerous certifications and awards, supporting its position as a unique and pioneering office project. Its exceptional ratings in sustainability, design and user well-being include a BREEAM-NL "Outstanding" rating making it one of the most sustainable buildings in the Netherlands. The "Well Platinum" certification attests to the campus’ outstanding work environment, promoting mental, physical and social well-being for users.

The site is home to major tenants such as Uber and an international law firm, whose employees benefit from the exceptional design. Visitors and residents alike enjoy the spectacular architecture and the publicly accessible park.
