Lighting flexibility in the hospital environment

TRILUX designs the lighting for the new Isabel Zendal Hospital in Madrid

Hospital facilities need to meet very demanding requirements to ensure the well-being of both patients and staff. Lighting is one of the most important aspects in the design and construction of a new healthcare complex, as it must be adapted to the specificities of each environment and the different activities that take place. TRILUX's broad portfolio of solutions, experience, flexibility and the proximity of the production process have enabled it to meet the challenge of lighting the Hospital de Emergencias Enfermera Isabel Zendal complex in Madrid (Spain), built in just 100 days to respond to the healthcare needs caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The health crisis caused by Covid-19 in 2020 put health systems around the world to the test. To address the situation and provide immediate care for people affected by the virus, the government of the Community of Madrid (Spain) designed the new Emergency Hospital Enfermera Isabel Zendal in June of that year, which was built in just 100 days. The design of the complex allows it to flexibly meet the changing needs that have arisen in the wake of the pandemic. It has three hospital modules that can be adapted to the requirements of the moment, complete ICUs, storage spaces prepared for the reception of medical material and equipment for the staff.

The characteristics of the project, together with the speed required by the work, made it necessary to find a lighting solution that would allow the entire complex to be illuminated adequately, efficiently and quickly. The construction companies found in TRILUX a partner that met the needs of the project thanks to its extensive portfolio, the flexibility and adaptability of its solutions, and the proximity and efficiency of its production centres. With a small number of luminaire references, the entire Hospital Enferemera Isabel Zendal has been covered, providing aesthetic and technical uniformity.

The keys to the project: agile production and a broad and flexible portfolio

The biggest challenge presented by the Hospital Enfermera Isabel Zendal project was the immediacy required. TRILUX selected and produced the lighting solutions quickly in its factories in Spain and Germany thanks to the multidisciplinary nature and involvement of its teams, speeding up the process to ensure that the established deadlines were met. Manufacturing in Europe made it possible to adapt the luminaires to the requests of architects and builders, customising their design and adjusting orders to changes that arose during construction.

Multi-purpose solutions ready for hospital environments

The hospital modules, designed to accommodate patients and medical staff, are the most important in the new complex. Good lighting can help patients recover and is key to creating a comfortable environment for workers. With these objectives in mind, Mirona Fit floodlights were installed, specially designed for large structures and open spaces, offering a luminous flux of 13,100 lumens. The continuous line installation facilitates maintenance and prepares the complex for the future installation of solutions based on the internet of things (IoT).

In the case of the ICUs, the installation had to meet cleanroom standards, so SL65008465ETDDD recessed luminaires were selected, providing a high luminous intensity of 8,500 lumens. For the lighting of staff areas such as changing rooms, rest or waiting rooms, corridors and other communal areas, Ambiella G2 circular downlights with 1,900 lumens were combined with Siella G6 recessed 600x600 mm panels with 3,600 lumens.

Safe warehouses and car parks with suspended luminaires

For the logistics module of the Isabel Zendal Hospital, suspended luminaires model E-Line Next 7651 LVN were chosen, which can be adjusted to the height of the environment and comply with regulations to prevent glare. In this way, a space with 10-metre shelves can be adequately lit thanks to its 14,700 lumens. On the other hand, the Deveo G2 model was used to light the car park area and stairs thanks to its versatility, which allows it to be installed both suspended and surface-mounted and provides a luminous flux of 5,500 lumens.

An example of people-centred lighting

The lighting design of the Enfermera Isabel Zendal Emergency Hospital has been carried out following the principles of people-centred lighting (HCL), which seeks the biological, emotional, health and well-being benefits of users through lighting that mimics and simulates natural daytime conditions. TRILUX promotes this concept, placing people at the centre of lighting planning in order to offer them comfort and meet their needs. In addition, the installation at the Isabel Zendal Hospital complex has been planned holistically, meeting the current needs of patients and staff while at the same time preparing it for future digitalisation.
