Spotlight on outdoor lighting

An Interview on Light + Building 2024

Outdoor lighting is one of our key topics at Light + Building 2024. As Head of Product Management Outdoor, Jörg van de Loo is our outdoor lighting expert, so we sat down with him to explore what exciting topics and innovations await visitors at the trade fair.

Firstly, what are the current market trends and conditions?

The LED refurbishment of outdoor lighting is still one of the most pressing issues, driven by high cost-saving potential and a new understanding of sustainability. In addition, there are significantly higher demands on lighting quality, luminaire design and the integration of smart technology in outdoor lighting systems.

What can we look forward to at Light + Building?

There is a lot to look forward to. The Low Contrast Light technology (LCL) is a major innovation; the unique design of the optical system reduces glare without compromising brightness. The light is particularly pleasant, ideal for pedestrian zones, residential streets, parks and green spaces. We will showcase the LCL technology in the decorative Lumantix post-top luminaire and the ConStela 19 light column at the fair.

Everyone is talking about sustainability. What do we have to show?

We have an array of sustainable solutions on display, such as the Lumega IQ N. It boasts impressive features, including zero stray light emissions, a low housing temperature and a high protection rating to prevent flying insects from being harmed. Furthermore, insect-friendly light spectrums are available on request to reduce the impact on wildlife. Additionally, by incorporating sensors and light management capabilities, the smart version of Lumega IQ N optimizes energy consumption and minimizes light pollution, contributing to a greener environment.

Is smart technology becoming more mandatory?

The future clearly belongs to networked, intelligent solutions that can be flexibly controlled. They ensure optimum visual conditions while taking into account the needs of the environment and can flexibly take on atmospheric lighting tasks. This is where our clever LiveLink Outdoor lighting management system continues to make its mark. With it, individual light points can be effortlessly connected to form a smart network and the benefits of lighting control can be exploited without effort or risk.

What other highlights should visitors look out for at the trade fair?

Definitely our Lumena Plus 80/90 planar floodlights for large sports and industrial facilities. With customized MLT IQ lenses, the luminaires provide excellent light quality with luminous flux packages of up to 190,000 lumens. And here, too, LiveLink brings new possibilities into play, for example, dynamic lighting scenes for goal celebrations in sports venues.

Are there emerging trends in design and aesthetics?

I am particularly pleased that the focus is shifting to building surrounds as a bridge between buildings and public spaces. The market demands high-quality solutions that blend harmoniously into the architecture as design elements and can take on both functional and decorative lighting tasks. Two examples on our stand are the Skeo range - which meets every outdoor lighting requirement with its flexibility in terms of lighting technology, designs and installation types. Our 8841 bollard luminaire offers spacing of up to 14 meters, which is unique in the industry.

Thank you very much for the interview!
