With its new corporate headquarters, Montagne du Parc, in Brussels, the leading French multinational bank BNP Paribas has created a blueprint for the working environments of the future - combining spectacular architecture, well-being and sustainability. As a full service lighting provider, we delivered the multi-award-winning large-scale project with 14,000 light points. The project required maximum lighting quality, efficiency, human-centred lighting, smart control, and custom solutions to enhance the bold architecture.
BNP Paribas aimed to centralise and modernise offices while meeting the highest sustainability standards and employee well-being. The result is impressive on all levels. The multi-winged complex consists of ten floors above-ground and five below, featuring three public green courtyards on the 14,300m2 site. This unique 100,000m2 office space, designed for approx. 4,100 employees, met the passive house standard and has already received several awards, including the prestigious "Best Office and Business Development" prize at the MIPIM 2022 (Marché International des Professionnels de l'immobilier).
Our task was to find the perfect solution for each of the 14,000 light points. And it was not just a matter of illuminating foyers, offices, meeting and technical rooms, collaborative areas, a lecture theatre, galleries, corridors, sanitary areas and the outdoor facilities in a perfectly functional and atmospheric way. Special solutions were designed to complement the sophisticated architecture with its many open-plan spaces and unusual visual axes. Human Centric Lighting (HCL), which dynamically adjusts light colour to mimic natural daylight, enhancing visual comfort and stabilising circadian rhythms, was also on the wish list. "Thanks to the breadth of our product portfolio, our high quality standards, and our ability to deliver bespoke solutions, we met every requirement from a single source," explains Bert Van Cauteren, Country Manager Belgium & Luxembourg, who supported the project.
Architecture in perfection: The lighting concept had to preserve the ceiling’s clean aesthetic. Here, we mainly used flush recessed luminaires with a homogeneous light-emitting surface throughout the building. More than 9,000 39 luminaires were customised specifically for the project to provide ambient and workplace lighting. Above the workstations, for example, the 39 had to be integrated into several types of chilled ceiling. For this, we developed bespoke products based on the 39 ceiling light with MRX optics and UGR<19. The result is a highly functional ceiling system that aesthetically and functionally combines lighting and climate control. The 39s were combined with recessed spotlights for atmospheric lighting accents to give the rooms an attractive lighting dynamic. Sonnos and SncPoint spotlights are used in the washrooms, and Oleveon Fit and Montigo luminaires are used in the plant rooms. Additionally, further luminaires were selected for their design to add decorative, design and zoning elements to the scheme.
Some of the most striking lighting elements were developed in collaboration with partners. Bespoke luminaires for coffee and lounge areas were individually crafted for each floor, defining the open spaces while creating focal points. Key highlights include intertwined light rings several metres in diameter and a floating, semi-toroidal illuminated ceiling stretched with translucent fabric for a weightless effect. For TRILUX Belgium, Montagne du Parc represents its largest and most ambitious project to date. "We are incredibly proud to contribute to this pioneering office environment with our lighting solutions," concludes Bert Van Cauteren.
