Zaragoza, March 2025- The refurbishment and modernisation of Torres Colón in Madrid has transformed the 31-storey landmark into Spain’s most sustainable office building. Owned by Mutua Madrileña, it is the first in the country to be certified as a Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB). It will also receive the prestigious WELL certificate, which guarantees an exceptionally high-quality working environment, and LEED certification, recognising its sustainable and environmentally friendly design. An essential part of achieving these certifications is the smart lighting concept provided by TRILUX Spain. Around 3,000 luminaires have been installed throughout the building, delivering not only high-quality, energy-efficient light, but also intelligent light.
Mutua Madrileña set the highest sustainability standards for the renovation, in line with the Mutua Group's aim to constantly improve the resource efficiency and energy optimisation of its properties. As a result, the lighting concept needed to meet exceptionally high requirements, ensuring a highly efficient lighting solution with integrated sensors and Casambi as standard for lighting control. Aristides Perez, Application Manager TRILUX Spain Offices recalls, “After a demonstration with customised prototypes, where we were able to demonstrate our technological expertise, flexibility and adaptability, we were awarded the contract for this unique project."
TRILUX Spain has developed a series of custom-made linear luminaires especially for this project, which are used throughout the building. All luminaires are equipped with integrated daylight and presence sensors, allowing light levels to automatically adjust according to occupancy and time of day, thus ensuring efficient and health-promoting lighting. The light colour of 4,200 Kelvin meets the requirements of the WELL certification, which promotes an ideal working environment. In addition, the luminaires have a CRI 90 and URG 19, the optimum glare index for office work such as reading, writing or meetings. The installation was further complemented by Sonnos pendant luminaires in black, which were selected to create a contemporary aesthetic while enhancing lighting comfort for employees.
A key highlight of the project is the digital lighting control via the Casambi system. The luminaires are networked floor by floor via an internet connected gateway. allowing the maintenance team to easily monitor and control the lighting remotely. Furthermore, if a luminaire fails, it can be replaced without requiring reprogramming, as each light point on the building plan is linked to the programmed operating parameters. This saves time and money for the building owner.
With this project, TRILUX once again demonstrates its expertise in delivering sustainable and innovative lighting solutions that not only protect the environment, but also ensure maximum comfort and efficiency in modern working environments.
