Good lighting makes a big difference - especially in schools. At Primary School No. 1 in Mosina, Poland, we have modernised classroom lighting using energy-efficient Siella ceiling luminaires. Carried out during school hours, breaks, and holidays, the project reduces operating costs while significantly improving learning conditions. The next steps: lighting management, Human Centric Lighting (HCL), and refurbishment of the corridor lighting.
The modernisation of school lighting is often considered primarily from a financial perspective, focussing on energy efficiency and savings. However, investments in school infrastructure - particularly lighting -play a key role in improving the quality of education. Primary School No. 1 in Mosina, a multi-award-winning institution, is recognised for its high standards and progressive educational approach. "Our development strategy for 2024-2027 is based on five pillars: Collaboration, interdisciplinarity, project work, bilingualism and innovative learning methods. But for our pupils to thrive, they need the right conditions - including appropriate lighting," explains headmistress Ewa Agnieszka Szymanska.
One of the biggest challenges was time, as the refurbishment had to take place while the school remained in operation. "The collaboration with TRILUX was extremely effective. A precise needs analysis was crucial to finding the right solutions for our school.
“We were particularly impressed by the professionalism of the TRILUX experts - from consultation to delivery. Their reliability and commitment to deadlines meant the work could be completed without disrupting the school day," emphasises Headmistress Szymanska.
Further projects are already being planned. "There’s still a lot to do, especially in the corridors and communal areas. Even more important is the installation of a lighting management system to further improve efficiency," adds Szymanska.
For the Mosina school project, we drew on extensive experience from other educational refurbishments. For example, in Brescia, Italy, TRILUX is upgrading 70 schools over 15 years with smart lighting, LiveLink lighting management, HCL, and cloud-connected emergency lighting via ELMo. Investing in smart lighting also pays off financially: modernised schools can reduce lighting energy use by up to 50% thanks to sensor- and time-controlled light management.
Experts agree that the colour temperature of light significantly influences well-being and performance. Many schools are now turning to lighting management with HCL. HCL dynamically changes the colour temperature of the light over the course of the day in the same way as sunlight. This biologically effective light is perceived as especially pleasant and supports the circadian rhythm. At the same time, the lighting system allows full flexibility—adapting light colour and intensity to specific learning contexts. Warmer light can be used for group work, and cooler, activating light supports concentration.
"The right lighting increases concentration, lifts pupils' mood, and improves their willingness to learn - directly influencing their academic success and attendance. Thanks to TRILUX, we’ve taken an important step forward," concludes Szymanska.
