Endurance test in the classroom

Primary school in Leipzig refurbishes lighting with TRILUX Opendo LED with CO2 sensor

The primary school Clara Schumann in Leipzig is a state-recognised private school with a holistic approach to education and a musical-artistic focus. The school was looking for a partner to refurbish the outdated T8 lighting solution in a total of 150 classrooms. In the first step, one classroom was equipped with the TRILUX Opendo LED as a reference. A special feature: the system has an integrated CO2 sensor for monitoring air quality. Stephan Weise, Head of Sales East at TRILUX Germany, presents the project.

What are the school's goals for the lighting renovation?

The T8 fluorescent tubes installed in the school no longer meet the requirements for light quality and energy efficiency of modern lighting. In addition, the luminaires are directly affected by the upcoming T8 lamp ban, so there was an acute need for action. A solution was sought that would reduce energy costs and, with its lighting quality and luminaire design, match the high standards and artistic orientation of the primary school.

Why did you choose the Opendo LED?

With Opendo LED, we have a system in our portfolio that optimally meets the requirements of schools and educational institutions. This includes special light distributions such as asymmetrical panel light as well as flexible mounting options. Opendo LED can be installed as a single luminaire or continuous row, as a surface-mounted variant or as a suspended luminaire so was perfectly adaptable to the often challenging school architecture. The quality of light can also be precisely matched to the respective lighting task, for example with UGR19 for working with tablets and computers. Another important "soft factor" is the modern design with the lateral light edge. This makes the Opendo LED pleasantly different from the "classic functional" luminaires and ensures a modern lighting and learning atmosphere.

What role did the integrated CO2 sensor play?

The integrated CO2 sensor technology offers the school a practical additional benefit that makes many things easier, especially in times of pandemic. The sensor continuously measures the CO2 concentration in the room and indicates the air quality via a three-stage traffic light mechanism. If the LED Light switches from green to red, it is time to ventilate. This offers teachers more safety and also sensitizes students to the topic of air quality.

What exactly has already been implemented in Leipzig so far?

We have currently equipped the first classroom as a reference with fourteen Opendo LED luminaires, twelve as pendants and two as surface-mounted luminaires. One of the luminaires provides an optimal and glare-free illumination of the blackboard with an asymmetrical light distribution. The school management is very pleased with the result - but wants to wait until autumn to make a final assessment of the lighting quality in the dark season. I assume that we will then retrofit the entire school.

Next Steps - how smart will Leipzig become?

At present, hardly any lighting management is planned in Leipzig. However, networked Opendo LED solutions with daylight and presence sensors are used in many similar school projects. Sensor control reduces energy consumption and increases the quality of light by ensuring a permanently uniform lighting level. Therefore, we once again show the customer the possibilities and potential of smart lighting using various references and calculations. Customers are often surprised by how much good lighting management can achieve and how easy it is to implement. The Opendo LED is networked with the LiveLink light management system in a flash, wirelessly via WiFi if desired, and is also available as a variant with integrated presence and daylight sensors. Smart school lighting can be so simple - with the Opendo LED.
