We don't know who will win the Golden Bears at this year's Berlinale, but one thing is for sure: a trip to Berlin is always worth it. This is not just because the city has transformed into a cinematic and cultural mecca for enthusiasts and international celebrities for ten days but also because of the lighting technology, which plays a key role in setting the scene. With two major manufacturing projects around Potsdamer Platz, we’re closer than ever to the Berlinale – contributing to the festival ambience with a series of highly functional and aesthetically unique customised lighting products.
The centrepiece of the Berlinale is the area around Potsdamer Platz. The theatre at Potsdamer Platz is transformed into the Berlinale Palast, the main venue for competition films and celebrity-studded premieres. A stone's throw away, the Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art hosts the International Forum of New Cinema in the iconic "Centre am Potsdamer Platz" (formerly the Sony Centre). Our bespoke lighting solutions are right at the heart of the action, rolling out the red carpet in light for international guests and festivalgoers alike.
Since its recent refurbishment, Alte Potsdamer Straße has become a pedestrian zone—the vision: a vibrant neighbourhood with natural stone paving and outdoor seating. In cooperation with the Bartenbach planning office, we developed the lighting concept to revitalise and enhance the area with customised TRILUX Manufaktur solutions. The highlight: a giant ring chandelier suspended in the arcade’s central square, directly aligned with the Berlinale Palast. This eye-catching light sculpture serves as the perfect backdrop for a Berlinale selfie. Flanking the chandelier is another striking feature: the Triple-B pole-mounted luminaires illuminate the pedestrian zone and side streets. Available as both pole-mounted and suspended versions, they provide a distinctive and inviting ambience. Theoretically, both "The Chandelier" and "Triple-B" could shine in Berlinale red, thanks to networking and integrated RGBW/RGBWW modules.
There is also a lot to discover around the "Centre am Potsdamer Platz" in terms of lighting technology. Working with jack be nimble, we developed a modular mast luminaire that combines functional and decorative elements for the 27,000 m2 site. The luminaire is particularly striking in the 5,000 m2 forum in front of the iconic centre, which features a dynamically illuminated roof. The Sojourn light columns—up to eight metres high—feature sleek aluminium luminaire heads and goblet-shaped decorative elements, creating an elegant, organic effect reminiscent of swaying reeds in the wind.
On the Forum, the curved light poles form attractive islands of light in various combinations, providing a park-like ambience that invites people to linger. Thanks to smart networking and integrated RGBW modules, the decorative elements change colour dynamically, synchronising with the roof lighting to create a harmonious visual experience. This means that a visit to the capital is worthwhile even after the Berlinale - because the real stars of Potsdamer Platz are here to stay.
