Since June, our Oleveon Fit and Aragon Fit luminaires have been available in a more sustainable version. Both the diffuser and luminaire housing are made from 100 percent recycled plastic. The quality remains uncompromised - but the impact on the environment is significant.
As part of our sustainability strategy, we continuously look for ways to reduce our products’ carbon footprint and resource consumption across all countries, regions and levels. One exciting development from our Spanish subsidiary, Zalux, is the introduction of moisture-proof luminaires made from recycled materials. This project wasn’t just about exploring feasibility but delivering a marketable product. "Concrete demand from the market encouraged us to press ahead with this innovation and bring it to maturity in a short space of time," recalls Manuel Pina, Sustainability Director at Zalux, who played a key role in the project.
A critical goal of the project was ensuring that the recycled materials used did not compromise the luminaires’ performance, particularly their efficiency, light quality, or durability. To achieve this, we selected different materials for the housing and diffuser. For the diffuser, we use post-industrial PC remnants from automotive and consumer electronics production. These include discarded materials such as headlight casings or monitor screens. This high-quality polycarbonate ensures excellent optical performance of our moisture-proof luminaire diffusers.
For the housing, on the other hand, we use less demanding post-consumer material made from recycled PC bottles. Only green bottles are used because the material is intended to remain pure, resulting in a subtle translucent green tint. We have retained this not only for sustainability reasons but to avoid dyeing. The color provides a subtle accent, distinguishing these luminaires as a particularly sustainable solution for use in demanding environments.
Additionally, the luminaires are compatible with LiveLink light management and sensor technology, further reducing CO₂ emissions during the use phase and enabling a more holistic approach to sustainability.
We sourced the recycled materials in pellets from a European supplier, allowing them to be seamlessly integrated into our normal production process. "Through extensive material and quality testing, we ensured that the products made from recycled materials have the same high-quality properties as those made from virgin materials," explains Manuel Pina.
The project began in April 2023, with the supplier search led by Diego Coello, Plastics Category Manager at TRILUX GROUP. Material testing, production and product trials, and the final release were led by Luis Betrian from Engineering between January and June 2024.
Now, since November, our Aragon Fit and Oleveon Fit are also available in their new recycled versions – easily recognizable by their green housing and the ‘RCY’ designation in their product name.
Let's go green!
