A well-deserved quality seal: Our innovative E-Line Pro IP50 continuous-row lighting system has been awarded ENEC certification! The official presentation took place on 8 February at a VfL Wolfsburg partner meeting with VDE, one of Europe’s leading testing and certification bodies. But what exactly does ENEC certification mean, and how does it differ from other labels such as GS or CE? Thomas Weigand, a state-certified technician from the TRILUX certification team, takes us into the world of certifications and answers some basic questions.
Products placed on the market in the European Union must bear the CE mark, confirming they meet the mandatory EU safety and performance standards. These are laid down in various EU directives and define minimum requirements for electrotechnical products. They include safety design, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), energy efficiency and other product characteristics. If these requirements are demonstrably fulfilled, the manufacturer may declare conformity with the directives and label the product with the CE mark - the "passport" within the EU.
The CE mark (Conformité Européenne) is a mandatory mark for products sold in the European Union. With it, the manufacturer confirms that the product fulfils the basic requirements of the European directives.
The ENEC mark (European Norms Electrical Certification) is a voluntary safety mark. It is awarded by accredited European test centres for products that comply with European standards.
The GS mark (tested safety) is also a voluntary safety mark. As a national mark, it is valid in Germany and confirms conformity with the Equipment Safety Act.
Although CE marking is legally required, it only confirms basic regulatory compliance—offering no direct product comparison for customers. This is why certificates from independent test centres make sense. They enable companies to objectively assess product quality using standardised test criteria. Many customers and tenders, especially from the public sector, require this type of independent product assessment and the corresponding proof. ENEC is the perfect example. Our goal is to certify all our series luminaires with the European ENEC test mark.
The first step is for the design engineer or electrotechnical expert to order certification of the new product family from our internal CERT department. They must submit a wide range of documents, from the complete part list with allocation of the most important components (LEDM, LEDC, sensors, etc.) to certificates and data sheets for the components, assembly instructions and product data sheets.
Once all the data is available, our CERT department issues the order for certification to an external testing centre. CERT then determines the required test samples together with the test centre. Each critical component must be recorded at least once during an inspection.
Our ENEC test scenario included, heating and durability tests, a protection test against the ingress of solids and dust as well as testing dielectric strength, insulation properties, leakage and protective conductor current. The basic luminaire design was also assessed as part of the certification process, as were the product-related inscriptions, labelling and installation instructions. After successfully completing the tests, we received the ENEC certificate with the test report and the associated attachments. The handover took place during a partner meeting at VfL Wolfsburg.
