Lighting in sports facilities must create good visual conditions for sportspersons, athletes, referees, spectators as well as television and film recordings. The European standard EN 12193 "Light and lighting – Sports lighting" in its 2008 revision defines requirements for the lighting of indoor and outdoor sports facilities for the most common types of sports in Europe. It provides values for illuminance, uniformity levels, glare limitation and colour rendering properties (colour rendering index) of light sources to facilitate design and verification of sports facilities. All requirements are to be regarded as minimum values.
