The importance of fire stations had made it necessary to standardise particular lighting requirements in the past, which now have been mostly covered by EN 12464-1. Germany’s compulsory accident insurance provider (Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung DGUV) has also defined minimum requirements for lighting in the informational publication GUV-I 8554 “Safety in the fire station” (2016 edition). The design values according to table were compiled using this GUV publication as well as EN 12464-1.
Fire stations
Fire stations are work places with particular hazards. Design values should therefore only be interpreted as minimum and orientation values. Also, corresponding occupational health and safety provisions must be observed. Particularly pronounced differences in brightness between outdoor and indoor areas must be prevented to avoid impaired vision due to shifting adaptation to different lighting levels. Adjacent rooms should therefore feature illuminance differences of no more than 1 : 10, otherwise accordingly lit transition zones must be created. This applies particularly to entrances and exits, e.g. hall gates. Here, the indoor transition zone should be illuminated with at least 2 · Em in daytime operation, the minimum being 400 lx. For night-time operation, the transition area is outside the hall entrance and must be illuminated with 0,5 Ēm to 0,2 Ēm, Ēm in both cases being the (maintained) illuminance of the indoor area which is not always necessarily a traffic area, but can also be a working area with higher visual tasks. The GUV publication requires a maintained illuminance of 50 lx outside of hall entrances. Outdoor parking spots and paths must be illuminated with 10 lx.
